The Emperor’s Soul – Emperor’s Wing (Mood)

New portfolio project! I’m doing a Visual Development Project based on Brandon Sanderson’s novella „The Emperor’s Soul“.

This is the – for now – last painting of the series, a mood painting of the hallways found in the Emperor’s wing of the imperial palace.

Huge Thanks goes to Yen Shu Liao, who helped me throughout this project with making sure I don’t mess up the „Asian“ (more particular, Taiwanese) inspiration too much, and also helped me out with Chinese search words when English & dictionaries failed me. Thank you!
If not for all that help I’d probably have ended up putting references for longevity on prison cells and the like… :) And last but not least Yen is also the reason why I had a huge pile of my own photographs of Taiwanese temples and museums as reference for this project. Thank you!

The project is based on Brandon Sanderson’s novella „The Emperor’s Soul“.
Set in an Asian-inspired fantasy world, we follow the story of Shai, a so called „forger“ with the magical ability to change an object’s appearance and history by applying a „soul stamp“ to it.
